WXIA-TV hit the air for the first time on 30 Sep 1951 as an ABC-affiliate channel with the call-letters WLTV on Virtual CH 8. The channel’s original owner was a Broadcasting Inc, a company formed by a group of businessmen in Atlanta.

Some significant changes to the station occurred when Federal Communication Commission lifted a ban on new Television broadcasters in April 1952 with the Sixth Report and Order. After that, Channel 8 shifted to Channel 11 at Atlanta; the change didn’t happen until Sep 1953, when Crosley Broadcasting Corporation purchased the network from Broadcasting Inc. On 3 March 1953, Crosley flipped the calls from WLTV to WLWA.

Station History

In 1962, WIBC Inc, by a business from Indianapolis, acquired the ownership rights of WLWA. However, the station’s ownership once again shifted to Pacific & Southern Broadcasting in 1968, under which WLWA transformed its calls to WQXI (currently WXIA). Later, the media company Pacific & Southern partnered with Combined Communications, and the channel once again changed its call-letters to WXIA-TV on 25 December 1973, which the network is using till today. Combined Broadcasting merged with Gannett Company in 1979; it was the history’s largest media merger at that time.

Channel 11 News Atlanta traded affiliation partners with WSB-TV on 1 September 1980, since then it has been broadcasting NBC content. In August 1994, Gannett Company decided to remove 11 Alive brand; though the moniker was so famous in Atlanta, the company had to restore it within the one month on viewer’s demand.

WXIA-TV Profile

Gannet Company divided into two parts, one focusing the print media and the other one specialized in digital and broadcast media called Tegna Inc., both WATL and WXIA were inherited by the latter one.
