Channel 7 Boston, which operates at Virtual CH 7 and UHF CH 35, works under the ownership of Sunbeam Television, along with a CW affiliate sister network WLVI. Both WHDH News and WLVI share the same studio facilities in downtown Boston’s Bulfinch Palace; however, their transmitter lies in Newton, Massachusetts. 7 News Boston uses a tagline ‘The News Station’ for its coverage.
From 1982 to 1995, Channel 7 News Boston remained a CBS affiliate network, following the affiliation of its precursor station WNAC-TV. WHDH transferred to NBC network in January 1995, when CBS decided to ditch 7 News Boston in place of WBZ-TV. On 1 January 2017, Channel 7 Boston became an independent entity, solely focusing on the newscast, by dropping its affiliation with NBC network, which then moved to newly developed O&O station WBTS-LD.

The original possessor of Boston’s Channel 7 was WNAC-TV, which started operating as Boston’s 1st CBS-affiliate network on 21 June 1948. In 1961, the channel flipped its affiliation with ABC, though later it again started taking CBS content in 1972. The original owner of the channel was RKO General.

In 1982, RKO decided to sell non-license physical assets of the channel 7, including the studios as well as transmitter facilities, to NETV. Nearly after five hours, NETV took charge of the station and signed in as a new WNEV-TV.
In 1991, when the partnership between Robert Kraft and David Mugar went rogue. Robert, the New England Patriot’s current owner, devised a plan to force David to buy his part of shares for around 25m dollars. On 22 April 1993, David Mugar could be able to run WHDH news no longer and finally sold it to Sunbeam Television, a firm being managed by Edmund Ansin from Edmund and based in Miami. The deal finalized in late July.
On 2 August 1994, WHDH news (Channel 7 Boston) declared that it would go for NBC affiliation instead of Fox, because of the NBC’s newscast and sports coverage. In January 2016, NBC Owned Television Stations’ President Valari Staab stated that NBC would not continue its affiliation with the Channel 7 Boston and that it would end the relationship with the station on 1 January 2017 and initiate its own NBC O&O TV service NBC Boston in the same day. Thus later, it became an independent channel targeting the newscast.
