Channel’s Introduction
KMIZ hit the waves for the first time on 5 Dec 1971. KCBJ-TV is the call-signs and ABC-affiliate network. Before that, ABC was demoted in the Missouri area to secondary clearances on KRCG (a CBS affiliate) and KOMU-TV (an NBC affiliate). The original owner of KCBJ (now ABC 17 News) was Channel 17 Inc. by brothers Robert Koenig and Richard Koenig. Whereas, the channel’s studios were originally situated on South 7th St., Columbia.

History
In 1984, Koenig Brothers sold the network to Stauffer Communications. After turning to the new owners, the channel shifted its call-signs to the current ones KMIZ-TV. In 1955, Stauffer Communications developed a partnership with Morris Communications. However, they didn’t let Morris keep the ownership of former Stauffer TV networks. Following that, in 1996, Stauffer sold its old TV stations, including KMIZ, to the Benedek Broadcasting. After getting the ownership of KMIZ-TV (ABC 6 News), Benedek Broadcasting decided to establish two-LP channels, including K11TB, Jefferson City. And other K02NQ, Columbia, as an effort to bring Fox into the picture.
In 2002, Benedek had to face bankruptcy and sold most of its TV channels to Gray Television. It includes KMIZ TV and later, it was transferred to Chelsey Broadcasting before going under JW Broadcasting in May 2003.

It produces the latest regional and national news. The network operates under the ownership of NPG of Missouri, LLC. It is a sub-company of News-Press & Gazette Co.
The company, whose headquarter lies in Saint Joseph, has been O&O by the Bradley family since the 50s. It is now working under the fourth generation of the family.
