Channel’s Overview

The channel started operating as WTVN on 29 September 1949. It was the second TV network to hit the air in the Columbus market. The station originally used to work under the ownership of Edward Lamb and Picture Waves Inc. At the time of its launch, WTVN was primarily linked with DuMont Television Network, and ABC was its secondary affiliate. Although, in 1955, the station made ABC its full-time affiliate partner and started taking content from it.

Picture Waves decided to sell WTVN to Radio Cincinnati Inc., in March 1953. Later, Radio Cincinnati changed its name into Taft Broadcasting Company. In 1987, Channel 6 News Columbus Ohio was sold to the new owner Robert Bass, who happened to own a company Anchor Media. The sale was finalized in August 1987, and following the ownership shift, the station’s call letters were changed from WTVN to WSYX. In 1993, Anchor Media was bought by the River City Broadcasting, which later merged its operations with Sinclair Broadcasting Company in 1996. The channel us using the same call-signs WSYX and operating under the name of the same owner Sinclair, till today.
