Channel’s Overview
The network started operating as WENR-TV on 17 Sep 1948. It was the 3rd TV channel in the market. The first two were WGN-TV and WBKB. However, Channel 7 News Chicago was the 2nd ABC-owned service in the entire United States.
In Feb 1953, ABC merged its operations with UPT (United Paramount Theater). On 7 Oct 1968, the WNER-TV flipped its call-signs to the current ones WLS-TV, to align with its sister radio.
Al Parker became a member of the channel as an announcer in 1963. He delivered his services for more than 26 years. Parker also used to host The Oprah Winfrey Show and AM Chicago. Al died peacefully at the age of 74, after spending a great life.
On 17 Jan 1984, WLS-TV decided to initiate a Tele1st service. It used to carry movies and lifestyle shows. The service’s format was much similar to ONTV and other on-air pay services of that time. The primary purpose of Telefirst was the record the programming so that it could be used later. However, the channel had to terminate the project in June 1984, as it resulted in total failure.
On 12 June 2009, WLS-TV shifted from analog transmission to digital service. It was the same date when FCC asked all full-powered stations in the USA to make the change.
