In April of 1986, CBN announced to sell WXNE and its other two broadcasters. In August of the same year, News Corporation announced to acquire WXNE to make it and owned-and-operated channel of its Fox Broadcasting Company. The sale was completed on 31st December of the same year. After the acquisition, News Corporation changed the calls of the TV broadcaster to what it currently uses “WFXT” on 19th January 1987. According to the Federal Communications Commission, a company cannot own a Television and Newspaper in the same market. So the channel was sold to Boston Celtics Ownership Group and became a sister broadcaster of WEEI.

During 1992, the station climbed to the third rank. While operating under the wings of Boston Celtics, the station had the threat of losing Fox affiliation. Fox Broadcasting Company resolved its issue with FCC’s rules. So, it reacquired the station on 7th July 1995. Later, 24th June 2014, Fox exchanged WFXT and its sister channel WHBQ-TV with Cox Media Group for KTVU and an independent broadcaster KICU-TV. The ownership rights were transferred to Cox Media Group on 8th October of that year.
