History of CBS News Sacramento
KOVR 13 first started broadcasting on 6 September 1954 from the annual state fair of California. It is one of the oldest Television services operating in the Sacramento market. KOVR 13 news originally signed on as the independent network from the transmitter facility situated on Mount Diablo. However, the channel’s original studios were situated in Miner Avenue, Stockton. Art Finley was one of the notable TV personalities on the CBS 13 Sacramento live steam, who used to host a children’s show “Toonytown.”
Acquisition of KOVR by ABC
KOVR got ABC affiliation in May 1957 when it decided to merge itself with KCCC-TV, the original ABC affiliation in the area. Later, KCCC-TV terminated its operations, and ABC-affiliation automatically shifted to KOVR. In 1958, Channel 13 was sold to Gannet Company, which eventually became Tegna Inc. But Gannet didn’t keep it for long and gave it away to John Kluge’s Metropolitan Broadcasting. In 1965, McClatchy Newspaper showed interest in buying KOVR 13; they ran the network together with KWG 1230 AM radio station and Modest Bee and The Sacramento Bee newspapers.
KOVR was going perfectly fine until it decided to change the ownership once more. This time, Outlet Communications came in and possessed all the assets of the station in 1978. After that, Channel 13 started to decline in both programming quality and ratings. After going through few more ownership changes, the station eventually fell into the Sinclair Broadcast Group. There, it added some First tags in its service e.g., it became the first Television channel to start using videotape in northern California for its news broadcast and was the first in the region to telecast on the stereo.
KOVR & CBS Network
KOVR 13 ultimately ended up swapping the affiliate partner with KXTV, the longtime CBS-running television network. With this move, Channel 13 (aka CBS 13 Sacramento) became the CBS affiliate network and later acquired the ownership of CBS Television Stations as well.
