WBZ News started operating on June 9, 1948, under the name of Westinghouse Electric Corporation, with a newscast being hosted by Arch MacDonald. The channel was an NBC-affiliate right from the beginning because of the WBZ Radio’s affiliation with NBC Red Network. After hitting the air, WBZ-TV became the only TV channel to start operating in the New England region.
On August 31, 1954, the channel had to face the termination for a while due to Hurricane Carol as it destroyed the network’s transmitter. However, shortly after, the network installed a temporary tower in order to resume its transmission. Then in 1957, the channel started airing properly again from a 366m long tower in Needham. The tower location is now familiar as the CBS Digital Television Broadcasting Facility.
CBS News Boston was also the pioneer station to broadcast daily news coverage, starting from the channel’s very first night. On January 2, 1995, the third primary affiliation switch in the Boston Market took place, in which WBZ News ended its 47-years long relationship with NBC and started getting content from CBS.
After Westinghouse decided to merge with CBS outright in November 1995, Channel 4 became a CBS O&O channel. As a condition of the agreement, CBS had to let go of WPRI-TV, which was operating in Providence, Rhode Island.
