The broadcaster is operating at VHF Digital CH 7 and Virtual CH 2 and works under the ownership of Fox Television Stations. Mainly, it telecast local news around Metro Detroit. Channel’s Overview

Fox 2 News Detroit first hit the air on 24 Oct 1948 and became the 3rd TV channel to establish in Detroit after WXYZ-TV and WWJ-TV (Currently WDIC-TV); all these stations launched in the timeframe of fourteen months. After signing-on, the first show to telecast on WJBK was Lucky Pup at 6:15 pm. The original owner of the station was Fort Industry Broadcasting by George B. Storer, and its initial affiliate networks were CBS and DuMont.

Until 1956, WJBK originally maintained its operations at Masonic Temple, Detroit. Later, it shifted to a purpose-built Studio facility at 2nd Avenue, New Center Section, Detroit. In 1955, WJBK-TV eventually became a full-time CBS affiliate channel, when DuMont Network decided to take an interest in CKLW-TV, a CH 9 TV broadcaster based in Windsor, Ontario. In 1956, the network began color transmission, and in 1970, WJBK transferred to its current location West Nine Mile Road, Southfield.

From 1980 to 1990, Channel 2 News Detroit faced a lot of ownership and management changes. In 1985, KKR (Kohlberg Kravis Roberts) purchased Storer Communications, including WJBK. In 1986, When FCC approved a merger between ABC-Capital Cities Communications, KKR decided to sell all the assets of Storer Broadcasting to Gillett Communications in 1987. Gillet had to give the channel’s ownership to SCI in 1992, because of facing bankruptcy. In 1993, New World Communications bought all the ownership rights of SCI, thus shifting WJBK under the new management.

Channel 2 under Fox Network

News Corporation (Fox’s previous parent company) bought 20 percent shares of New World Communications in May 1994. Fox wanted to get broadcasting rights for NFL’s National Football Conference; therefore, it decided to take this step. Following Fox’s investment, New World Communications made a deal that they would convert most of the affiliations of their TV channels into Fox.

On 11 December 1994, after the channel’s contract with CBS came to an end, WJBK became the new Fox affiliate entity in the region.
