On 1st February 1984, local newscasts debuted on Fox 59 News Indy – the day when it began operations as WPDS-TV. It also started a one-hour-long 10:00 pm newscast, titled 59 Headline News. Long-form newscasts of channel 59 returned in September 1991 after the start of the WXIN news department.

Fox 59 IndyThe news department starts producing a nightly thirty-five-minute newscast at 10:00 pm. Indy Channel 59 expanded news programming outside its established 10:00 slot on 29th March 1999, when premiered Fox 59 am. The program formatted as a mix of news, lifestyle, and entertainment and initially aired from 06:00 to 09:00 am. However, in 2004, the show reformatted as a more traditional newscast and grew to beat other morning news programs. On 17th April 2006, the television channel expanded the flagship 10:00 pm newscast to one hour. In May 2007, Fox 59 local news entered into a content partnership with the Indianapolis Business Journal. Under the partnership agreement, it provides news and weather content for newspapers.

Furthermore, the channel added one hour onto its morning newscast on 17th April 2006 from 05:00 to 06:00 am. In April 2009, it launched Indysportsnation.com along with the debut of the weekend evening sports program, IndySportsNation Overtime. WXIN/WTTV became the first known duopoly involving channels affiliated with two of the Big Three Networks. News departments of both channels housed out of their shared facility on Network Place. On 3rd May 2015, Fox 59 debuted In Focus, a thirty-minute Sunday morning show focusing on civic and political issues. Currently, it reduced the Sunday morning newscast by thirty minutes in order to make room for the program.
