About KTBC

KTBC started its journey on 27th November 1952 as a first TV operator in the market of Austin and Central Texas and retained this title until KHFI-TV began operations in February of 1965. The original studio of the station was based in the Driskell Hotel. The ownership rights were transferred to future US President Lyndon B. Johnson and his wife, Lady Bird. Lady Bird also held the title of becoming the first President’s wife. She became a millionaire by her efforts. After the announcement of Lyndon B. Johnson, the questions were raised about how the family of President owned millions of dollars.

It was difficult for Lyndon B. Johnson to manage the station after he became the President locally. So, news reports were often delivered to the owner in the president Oval Office. Plus, he also monitored them from his private study in the White House. The Penthouse Apartment on the fifth floor of the station was fully kitted with Camera and Sound hardware. Fox 7 News produced a short film of 20 minutes for the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1960. The film was about the nuclear missile strike on the outskirts of Austin. On 1st August 1966, the multi-network capability was introduced for the first time.

Affiliation and Ownership History:

KTBC broadcasted on VHF channel 7 since the day it launched until 2009. On the other hand, the licensed UHF channel for the station was 56. The station used that figure from 1997 to 2009. At that time, the VHF bands were considered more reliable due to their long-distance programming. The Analog transmission of the broadcaster was discontinued on 12th June 2009. Fox 7 Live started as an affiliate of CBS, DuMont, ABC, and NBC. CBS finished its affiliation in 1995, DuMont in 1956, ABC in 1971, and NBC discontinued its affiliation agreement in 1966.

In 1973, the channel was purchased by a Los Angeles-based Times Mirror company as a sister operator of KDFW-TV. In 1994, the ownership rights were transferred from Times Mirror Company to Argyle Television. The current owner “Fox Television Stations” took over the broadcaster as its owner in 1996.
