About KCOY News
KCOY News first initiated operations on 16 March 1964. The channel may would have never established if FCC wouldn’t allow a move to change KFRE-TV’s CH number from 12 to 30 due to the pressure from Central Coast’s politicians. Beth Farnsworth and Dave Alley are the prominent faces in KCOY News Team.
Because of that decision, KCOY-TV got a chance to hit the waves in Santa Maria at CH 12. It originally took affiliation from the NBC network while sharing the CBS affiliation (as secondary affiliate-partners) with KEYT. KCOY 12 worked under the possession of Central Coast Broadcasters for more than 12 years. It acquired the station from the original owners, who were on the verge of bankruptcy. In 1969, KCOY News decided to shift its affiliation from NBC to CBS (the current primary affiliate).

KCOY News Ownership History:
KCOY Santa Maria went under the ownership of Stauffer Communications in the early 1980s. Later, in 1995, Stauffer decided to merge its assets into Morris Communications. The deal didn’t go so well for Morris, as FCC didn’t allow the company to keep the former Stauffer TV channel KCOY 12. Following that, Morris decided to sell CBS Santa Maria to Benedek Broadcasting in 1996, together with its siblings. After keeping it for three years, in 1995, Benedek traded KCOY News with Ackerley Group in exchange for KKTV Colorado. In 2002, Clear Channel communication- currently known as
– purchased Ackerley Group.
Eventually, KCOY News ended up in the hands of VistaWest Media on 26 December 2013, while News-Press & Gazette Company would operate it under a shared service agreement.
