KENS-TV first started operating on 15 Feb 1950 with the callsigns KEYL at CH 5. Paramount Television Network was one of KENS’s most vital affiliate partners that used to cover the station’s almost entire schedule. Among those shows, the notable ones were Hollywood Reel, Latin Cruise, Armchair Detective, Movietown, Hollywood Wrestling, RSVP, and Time for Beany.

After one year, Storer Broadcasting decided to purchase the station along with its radio service KABC. Under the Storer ownership, the network calls were changed to KGBS-TV on 1 Feb 1954. Later, they eventually sold the channel to San Antonio Express-News. They were the ones who decided to change the network’s calls from KGBS to KENS on 12 June 2009. Since then, it has been sticking with these call-letters.
