What’s more in KIRO 7 News Channel?

Queen City, the KIRO radio owner, acquired the license for channel seven on 8 Fb 1958. Furthermore, the original studio of the KIRO 7 News was on Queen Anne Avenue, close to broadcaster tower. The first show presented by the station was the explosion of Ripple Rock.

KIRO Radio was linked to CBS for more than 20 years. Therefore, following that, KIRO-TV also became a CBS affiliate TV channel upon hitting the wave. In May 1960, KIRO 7 News had to reach an agreement with KTNT-TV that it will share CBS affiliation with it. Though, the settlement didn’t last long and ended in the next two years, which made KIRO 7 News the only CBS affiliate station in the market.

In April 1963, LDS Church started buying shares in Queen Broadcasting, beginning with 10 % stakes from different minority partners. After six months, the LDS Church bought 50% extra shares into the company, thus getting a majority control in KIRO Channels.

Belo Corporation Jumped in and bought KIRO-TV

Two days before moving to the new affiliate partner, Bonneville (the original owner of the station that time) decided to sell KIRO-TV to the Belo Corporation. However, it didn’t give away KIRO Radio. Moreover, later Belo announced that it would operate CH 7 as a news-focused independent channel. Though on 6 December, the channel made once again in affiliation switch and this time became a part of UPN.

On 31 Jan 1995, more modifications were applied to KIRO 7 News after Belo took charge. The network started sharing UPN content upon its launch on 16 January 1995.

There were rumors that Belo Corporation would exchange KIRO 7 News to Fox TV in the place of KSAZ-TV and KTBC-TV. However, on 20 February 1997, Belo declared that it would trade Channel 7 to the Viacom’s Paramount Stations Group (It is the owner of UPN owner that now inherits CBS as well) against the KMOV-TV.

Later, Viacom/Paramount swapped KIRO-TV to Cox Enterprise in the place of KSTW. The decision came after the one month when Cox declared that it would get that channel from Gaylord Broadcasting. The deal was concluded on 2 June 1997. Both channels decided to keep their respective syndicated shows.

In Feb 2019, Apollo Global Management decided to purchase Northwest Broadcasting and Cox Media Group’s channels.

Who is Chris Francis and what is his role in KIRO-TV

Chris Francis is the KIRO’s sports director that has been working in the station for so many years. He produces and hosts all the exclusive shows and sportscasts of the channel. It includes the Steve Raible Scouting Report, the transmission of March Madness, and Game Day Live, airing every Sat evening during the NFL Season. Before becoming a part of KIRO, Francis was serving Bay Area as a host for the PAC 12 Network for three years. There, he used to offer highlights and journalism on everything, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, and football shows. From 2009 to 2016, Chris Francis got two main designations: a general assignment news reporter and weekend sports anchor.

KIRO Radio is a commercial radio network that also provides services to the Seattle-Tacoma Washington. The channel focuses on producing news/talk format programs. The radio’s studios are situated in the Eastlake District of Seattle at Eastlake Avenue East. Moreover, the transmitter of the KIRO 7 10 Radio is installed on Tiger Mountain in Issaquah. KIRO Radio 97.3 uses an ERP of 52000 watts for the coverage.

Broadcast tower KIRO Radio telecasts in the High-Definition radio format. The station’s HD 2 signal rebroadcasts the sports coverage of KIRO AM 710. Its HD-3 transmission also telecasts the conservative talk format by the KTTH AM 770.

Some History related to the KIRO Radio

KIRO Radio first hit the waves on 26 October 1948, as KTNT-FM. The Tacoma News Tribune was the original owner of the radio channel. The network used to operate with the 10,000-watt power. In 1952, The Tacoma News Tribune decided to add AM channel i.e., KTNT AM. In 1953, they decided to launch a KTNT-TV on CH 11, which is now called KSTW. The callsigns of all three services represent the Tacoma News Tribune.

In 1976, the company flipped the station’s calls from KTNT-FM to KNBQ. Meanwhile, its AM service started broadcasting personality adult top 40 music, and FM channel picked automated music-focused Top 40 format simply known as the 97.3 KNBQ.

Increasing the length of Antenna

In 1980, the Tacoma News Tribune increased the signal strength of the channel up to 100,000 watts. The FCC approved the construction permit to lengthen the transmitter height up to 1480 ft. They also shifted the antenna location to Tiger Mountain. Consequently, this move entirely changed the station’s value among the community of Seattle Tacoma. In 1987, the company decided to sell the FM radio to Viacom.

On 1 Feb 1988, the channel changed the station’s format to an Oldies and took the call signs KBSG-FM (K-Best 97.3). Likewise, the station focused on the biggest hit songs of the 1960s, along with some of the 1950 and 1970 hit music.

On 12 August 2008, the station started simulcasting news/talk format of KIRO 710 AM. Whereas, on 1 April 2009, the version of the radio became the primary radio as the simulcasting on AM version came to an end. Thus, it marked the transition of the KIRO Radio Live from AM band to FM band. KIRO news radio is currently the flagship radio channel for the team’s match-to-match and post and pre-games.
