History:

The channel was launched on 19th June 1953 as a second TV station in South Carolina (currently the oldest continuously operating station in the entire state), operating from its studios on East Bay Street in Downtown Charleston. Initially, the station was licensed to broadcast analog transmission on VHF channel 5 as an affiliate of NBC, ABC, and DuMont. Most of the initial members of the channel were previously DJs of the radio stations, which later became part of WCSC-TV.

The station has been streaming Atlantic Coast Conference basketball and Southern Conference football locally since the 1980s. The studio location was changed to Charlie Hall Boulevard in the West Ashley section of Charleston in 1997.

The station broadcasted on VHF channel 5 from 1953 until 2009 and on UHF digital 47 until 2018. In the year 2000, the regional Doppler weather radar of Live 5 News started operating. The broadcaster is also accused of forcing Warren Peper by offering him only a one-year extension of his contract under the ownership of Jefferson-Pilot. There was also no renewal option. In the same year, the HD broadcasting was introduced for Live 5 News. The station launched its mobile apps in 2011. On 3rd October 2013, the name of the studio was changed to Bill Sharpe Studio to honor Bill Sharpe’s 40 years of serving on the TV channel.

Ownership History:

Initially, The Rivers family operated the TV station as its owner, but in 1987, it sold it to Crump Communications. Jefferson-Pilot Corporation acquired the channel in 1994. In 2006, the ownership rights were transferred to Lincoln Financial Media as a result of the merger between Jefferson-Pilot and Lincoln Financial Group. On 12th November 2007, Lincoln Financial Media announce to sell WCSC and other two sibling channel sin a deal to Raycom Media for $583 million. The deal was accomplished on 1st April 2008.

The current owner “Gray Television” announced to acquire the broadcaster in a deal of $3.65 billion. The Federal Communication Commission officially approved the ownership transfer on 2nd January 2019. The same owner is operating the station since then.
