About Channel

WPLG Local 10 News live stream first hit the waves as WPST-TV on 2 August 1957. It started operating as a 2nd ABC-affiliate channel in the market of Miami, Florida. The station originally worked under the management of Public Service Television, Inc. Later, FCC revoked the rights of National Airlines to operate WPST-TV.

After getting their license canceled, National Airlines sold all WPST-TV assets to Wilson’s group. On 20 November 1961, Channel 10 News Miami again started broadcasting as WLBW-TV. Soon, the channel was airing a few of its shows in color transmission. In 1969, the ownership rights for the station were once again flipped. This time, the Washington Post Company, took the ownership of WLBW station.

The new channel named itself a “Sunny Channel 10” under Wilson’s group ownership. It claims to be the first TV station in the history of Miami to represent a weather girl. The station flipped its call-letters to WPLG-TV on 16 March 1970. Moreover, it is also the only TV broadcaster in the Fort Lauderdale-Miami market to retain the same network affiliation throughout history. Because of that much consistency, WPLG is the highest-rate network in South Florida. In 2004, the channel decided to change its branding as well into “Local 10”.

Graham Holdings ownership

After being kept operating for a very long time under the name of Washington Post Company. The Amazon owner Jeff Bezos decided to purchase all the Channel 10 Miami assets. The company also acquired its other non-newspaper services.

Later, it changed the company’s name into Graham Holdings. On 12 March 2013, the channel finally ended up in the hands of its current owners Berkshire Hathaway.

Local 10 News Services

Currently, WPLG presents 54.5 hours/week of newscast produced locally. It is the 2nd local news channel devoting the highest number of hours in its news section. However, as an ABC-affiliate it is the number one of them all in the entire US. The station also covers a 1-hour long political show. Named as “This Week in South Florida”. The show first hit the air in 1990 and since then telecasts every Sunday morning.

The station used its first helicopter “Sky 10” for news service in 1979. The channel became popular in the area because of its well-known anchor duo of Ann Bishop and Glenn Rinker. The weather anchor Walter Cronise and sports host Chuck Dowdle were also popular.
