After getting her Media Studies and Production degree from Temple University, Simone Cuccurullo began her career as a Production Intern at Center City Film & Video in August 2013. About WWBT NBC12
NBC12 Richmond first hit the air on 29 April 1956 with the callsigns WRVA-TV. The channel’s original owner who succeeded in getting the licensing for CH 12 was Larus and Brother Tobacco Company. The network’s studios and antenna were situated in the unincorporated region of Chesterfield. WRVA-TV was originally a CBS affiliate network. The owner also used to have a radio channel long before the TV station called WRVP-AM, which was also a CBS affiliate and had quite a reputation in town. Unfortunately, it didn’t succeed in passing along the same reputation to its sibling TV network.
Post 1996: Changes in Ownership
Later, when the long-standing president of Larus and Brother company ‘William T. Reed’ died in 1966, the company decided to split its assets. Jefferson Standard Insurance company jumped in and bought WRVA-TV from Larus and Brother Company and started managing all its operations. After completing the sale and getting the ownership of Channel 12, Jefferson changed the network’s call-letters from WRVA to WWBT (the current ones) on 28 November 1968.
Affiliation with The WB and Sale to Raycom Media
In 1999, WWBT decided to take a secondary affiliate partner, “The WB Television Network.” It started broadcasting WB content late-night from Monday to Friday and Kids-focused WB programs on the entire week. Though, this little journey with WB came to an end on 31 August 2006 when they anticipated a merge between UPN and The WB to form The CW.
On 10 October 2005, Jefferson also declared to merge its operations with Lincoln Financial Media. Later, the company decided to sell Channel 12 together with two more TV networks and Lincoln Financial sports for 583m dollars to Raycom Media. At that time, Raycom was already holding the operations of WTVR; since FCC prohibits the possession of two of the four largest TV channels in a single market, Raycom decided to put WTVR on sale and kept WWBT, the highest-rated TV service. The company officially took control of WWBT on 1 April 2008.
On 25 June 2018, Raycom media decided to merge its broadcasting service with the Gray Television network, an Atlanta-based company. The deal allowed Raycom to possess 93 Gray’s TV channels along with its own 63 existing O&O Television networks. The sale between two major companies was authorized by the Federal Communication and Commission on 20 December 2018, which eventually concluded on 2 January 2019.
Currently, the WWBT operates under the name of Gray Television and takes content from NBC Network.
