About WAAY 31
WAAY 31 first hit the waves on 1 August 1959 under the calls WAFG-TV as the first primary ABC affiliate network in Alabama State. There was only one operational channel in the area at that time, i.e., an NBC affiliate WMSL-TV licensed to Decatur, which is now called WAFF and serves Huntsville.
The station’s calls were flipped to the current ones WAAY TV in 1963 when it came under the possession of new owner Smith Broadcasting. On 2 September 1968, the station jumped to the new affiliate partner NBC Network but then again returned to its original content provider ABC Network on 11 Dec 1977. In 2007, the channel’s news services were ranked at 3rd spot. It used to broadcast weekend morning news; however, it decided to drop that later. On 16 July 2007, WAAY 31 News introduced a new set and graphic resources like those of siblings WTXL and WWSB.
On 12 December 2011, the network started airing its newscast in HD, making it the 3rd TV service in the market to begin operating High-Resolution news after the WAFF and WJNT. In 2014, WAAY 31 unveiled three separate websites, Tech Alabama.com, redstonealabama.com, and Spacealabama.com for Northern Alabama’s tech, military, and space industries. Currently, after moving through several ownerships over the years, WAAY 31 now lies in the hands of Allen Media Broadcasting by Alabama TV License Company. Its present affiliate partners are ABC (primary) and Dabl, Ion Television & QVC (Secondary).
