About WCAX-TV
WCAX-TV hit the air on 26 September 1954 under the calls WMVT. It was the first TV station to initiate its services in Vermont and was originally a licensee of Montpelier’s Capital City. The service was first introduced by Charles P. Hasbrook. He was an owner of WCAX Radio (from 1939 to 1963) and an ex-publisher of Burlington Daily News (now terminated). In Dec 1954, When channel 3 news’s tower and transmitter were installed, its parent firm, “WCAX Broadcasting Corporation,” was rebranded into Mount Mansfield Television.
In May 1955, the WCAX News decided to shift its community license to Burlington, and just one month later, it changed its calls from WMVT to WCAX-TV in order to align with its sibling radio. The WCAX VT ownership was transferred to Hasbrook’s stepson Dr. Stuart T. “Red” Martin Jr. In 1958, who worked hard together with his father and developed the station from scratch. Currently, Channel 3 News Burlington, Vermont is working under the name of Gray Television and taking its primary content from CBS and secondary programming from Circle, Movies!, Ion Television, and Start TV.
