About WGAL 8

The first broadcast of WGAL News occurred on 18 March 1949, initially aired on Channel 4. It was the 4rth TV network to start operations in Pennsylvania and the first one to begin transmission outside the state, surpassing Pittsburgh’s WDTV News that was launched in November of the same year. WGAL 8 News’ original owner was Steinman Family, who used to operate WGAL Radio at that time, and the two major newspapers of the city called the Lancaster New Era and Intelligencer Journal.

The first formal program of the new station was shown on March 22 at the Stevens House Hotel in downtown Lancaster to a group of television dealers, RCA executives, and radio station personnel. A transmitter for WGAL is near the US 30 north of Hallam, with its studios situated on Columbia Avenue (PA 462) in Lancaster Township.

The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) allocation plan included an anomaly that greatly benefited WGAL. When broadcast television began in the 1920s, twelve VHF channels were available as well as 69 UHF channels (which were subsequently reduced to 55 in 1983). VHF carried signals for a longer distance, so they were more desirable. Because there were only twelve available VHF channels, the spacing between stations had to be kept to a minimum.

WGAL News 8’s News Operations

At present, WGAL broadcasts 39 hours of news locally every week (612 minutes during the week, 312 minutes on Saturdays, and 3 hours on Sundays). In addition to its studios in Harrisburg and York (on Market Street), WGAL also has studios in York (along South George Street). WGAL uses an automated real-time weather radar system known as “Super Doppler 8” at its transmitter facility. Since it is the only station in the area transmitting on VHF, it has long dominated the market.
