About WHEC 10

Gannet-owned WHEC 10, based near the Rochester Building, first hit the air on 1 November 1953, together with Veterans-owned WVET News, with its studios in Central Trust Building. The network initially took primary content from CBS Network and secondary programming from ABC Television Network. In May 1958, WHEC 10 studios were transferred from the corner of the Rochester Building to the current location on East Avenue.

WHEC News started using digital services on 27 September 2002 at UHF CH 58, under provisional authority. For years, Channel 10 News Rochester NY was among the three local channels providing services on cable in Gatineau, Ottawa, and some parts of Eastern Ontario. WHEC 10 terminated its analogue transmission at VHF CH 10 on 12 June 2009, when FCC imposed a countrywide transition of full-power US channels from analog to digital signals. Presently, News 10 NBC Live operates under the ownership and management of Hubbard Broadcasting.

The channel’s primary affiliate partner is NBC Network. However, Start TV, MeTV, Ion Television, and Heros & Icons act as the network’s secondary affiliates. Currently, WHEC Channel 10 presents twenty-seven hours of in-house produced news telecast every week. While working under the possession of Viacom, WHEC Rochester News continuously maintained the second position between WHAM News and WROC News in the Nielsen Ratings. The other reason was the channel’s affiliation with ABC Network, as at that time ABC was the top-rated US network in terms of viewership, unlike NBC, which was a distant 3rd place.
