About WILX News

WILX News hit the air for the first time on 15 March 1959 under the ownership of Jackson Telecasters together with WJCO 1510 AM Radio. Lansing Broadcasting, which used to own WILS 1320 AM Radio that time, had half ownership in Jackson Telecasters.

WILX News 10 Lansing News shared the frequency of VHF CH 10 with an educational TV service WMSB, working under the ownership of Michigan State University. That broadcaster was initially WKAR-TV telecasting on UHF CH 60. However, it was having a problem getting the audience because TV sets did not contain UHF tuning until 1964. For that, the households used to purchase an expensive converter, and even after that, the picture quality was rough. While trying to get a viewership in the region, MSU got in terms with WILX to share the frequency.

Both had a great time together until in 1972, WKAR decided to use the frequency UHF CH 23. WILX News Studios are close to I-96 on American Road, Lansing. However, the channel provides services through its antenna installed in Onondaga. Cable users can watch WILX live stream on Xfinity Ch 10 in Jackson & Lansing, Charter Spectrum CH 13 in Durand, and Comcast Xfinity CH 4 in Lansing. Moreover, WLNM-LF CH 27 works as a rebroadcaster of News 10 Lansing, allowing homes and helping stations reach up to the families with trouble getting their VHF or UHF signals.

WILX’s Journey Over the Years

In 1978, Jackson Telecasters decided to sell Channel 10 News Lansing to Jackson Telecasters. Later, in 1983, Figgie agreed to give it away to Adams Communications. Following that, In 1991, Brissette Broadcasting purchased the network and, after operating it for five years, transferred it to Benedek Broadcasting in 1996. Now WILX News has been operating under the name of Gray Television since 29 August 2002. It takes the primary content from NBC Network and secondary content from Heroes & Icons, Ion, Circle, Tue Crime Network, Antenna TV, and TCT.

News Services

For most of the time, NBC Channel Lansing MI News studios remained at Springport Road, Jackson, while continued producing news content from Downtown Lansing. At the beginning of the 1960s, WILX 10 operated only a single camera studio at Battel Creek and Lansing that used to produce 2-minute local newscasts related to these two towns during the primetime news telecasts. Since the 1990s, when WILX Lansing came under the possession of Brissette Broadcasting, the network started producing its content from the current studios located on American Road.

WILX News remained consistently at the second spot in the local Nielsen Ratings for many years; topping the ladder was WLNS-TV. However, in the 2000s, WILX TV 10 outdid WLNS-TV for the first time in history and has been maintaining a constant lead since then. The network launched its News 10 Today Morning Show in 1990 as a local news section during the Today show that ultimately expanded to present 2.5 hours long transmission. Although, its noon telecast was revoked in the late 1990s, the channel has not aired a news transmission during the middle of the day, unlike many other NBC TV services.
