About WLNS News

WLNS TV first hit the air on 1 May 1950 with the callsigns WJIM-TV together with WJIM Radio under the ownership of Harold F. Gross. It is currently the second oldest TV service operating in Michigan Market outside Detroit.

The channel used to broadcast programming from all the Major US networks including ABC, CBS, NBC and DuMont . However, it was primarily a CBS affiliate and has been until now. ABC was taken out of the picture in 1958 when WJRT-TV hit the waves. Later, NBC withdrew itself after WILX News started operations. By the end of 1959, Channel 6 was telecasting only CBS programming. The disputes in license forced Gross to let go of the broadcasting business. Following that, Gross sold WJIM News to Backe Communications in 1984. After possessing the station, Backe changed the station’s calls from WJIM to WLNS on 16 July 1984.

Later, after keeping the channel for two years, Backe sold it to Young Broadcasting. WLNS News works together with WLAJ News under SSA and JSA (shared Service Agreement/Joint Sales Agreement); the station operates under the ownership of Mission Broadcasting. WLNS TV has claimed several Michigan Association of Broadcaster and Regional Emmy Awards for providing local newscasts. Both WLNS and its website have claimed to be very successful among the audience and business development. Both WLNS and WLAJ share the same place for studios on East Saginaw St in the East section of Lancing. Whereas, the network’s antenna is installed on Van Atta Road, Okemos, Michigan.
