About WNEP TV
Initially, there were two ABC channels in northeastern Pennsylvania. WILK radio-owned WILK News operating at Virtual CH 34, licensed to Wilkes-Barre, as well as Governor William Scranton-owned WARM News operating at Virtual CH 16, licensed to Scranton. Later, both channels merged with each other and formed a new channel called WNEP 16, licensed to Scranton.

WNEP News started operations in 1962 from its new studios situated close to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre International Airport in Avoca. The station was bought from Taft in 1973 by NEP Communications, formed by WNEP-TV employees and executives. NEP’s news director Elden Hale was quick to adopt a regional focus after taking over the station. Moreover, Elden increased coverage of the remote portions of the market, describing the station as having service for “Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania.”
WNEP has aired many in-house productions instead of shows from other networks. A program for children called The Land of Hatchy Milatchy was the most popular.
Waymart, which has a transmitter in Forest City, owns and operates WNEP-TV’s digital replacement translator on UHF channel 22. Several NextEra Energy Resources wind turbines at the Waymart Wind Farm have an effect on high-definition television transmissions.
Studio facilities for WNEP-TV can be found on Moosic’s Montage Mountain Road, and transmitters for both stations are located at the Penobscot Knob antenna farm close to Mountain Top.
