About WTHR TV

WTHR News first hit the waves on 30 October 1957 with the calls WLW-I. The channel was established by
and initially took primary content from ABC Network which used to be an affiliate partner of WTTV before. Later in 1974, Crosley Broadcasting (which rebranded into Avco Broadcasting in 1968) declared that it is terminating the Broadcasting Franchise to raise cash. Following that, The Wolfe Family (owner of WBNS-AM-FM and Columbus Dispatch) purchased the channel in 1975 and flipped the calls to WTHR (the existing callsigns) on 29 January 1976. As soon as the new owner took control, the network’s programming quality started improving.Despite that, Channel 13 News Indianapolis continued to stick at the 3rd position behind WISH and WRTV. During that period ABC eventually topped the market and began to look for stronger affiliate partners. Meanwhile, NBC pushed back to last place among the TOP 3 Networks. Highest rated WRTV was quick to accept the offer from ABC during that hassle.

NBC lost its Integrity and lose the ownership of NFL Games
Following that both WTHR and WRTV exchanged the affiliate partners on 1 June 1979 with Channel 6 getting the ABC affiliation and Chanel 13 receiving the NBC network. NBC struggled hard to retain its integrity in the market and provided the NFL games to WTHR until it lost them to CBS in 1998. WTHR eventually put itself back to the track, though it still didn’t manage to get out of the third position. After jumping through numerous ownerships over the years, Dispatch (channel’s previous owner) decided to sell its broadcasting medias including WALV-CD and WTHR on 11 June 2019 to Tegna Inc. for 35 million dollars. That made both WTHR & WALV siblings to WHAS-TV. Plus, it also marked a history of Tegna Inc. possessing the first TV channel in in Indiana.
Some Other General Information
The channel works alongside WALV-CD, a Class A MeTV affiliate TV station operating at Virtual CH 46. Both networks share the same studios on North Meridian Street, Downtown Indianapolis. However, its antenna is installed in Carme close to the West 96 ST and Ditch Road.

WTHR News Services
Currently, WTHR 13 produces around 37 hour of local news service per week including 6 hours during Mon to Fri, three hours during Sat and four hours on Sun. For a substantial part of its on-air service, Indianapolis News NBC remained at third spot in terms of newscast behind WISH and WRTV.
Although, The Wolfes did its number on Channel 13 and put the news department back in action after injecting a lot of investment into it. Still, it wasn’t enough to get it out of the pit. However, in 1996, WTHR managed to rise to crawl up to second place after it recruited John Stehr, an ex-CBS News Correspondent, as the evening news anchor. For the following three years, the channel remained in a continuous battle with a dominated WISH Network. Later, WTHR finally manages to surpass WISH in many important timeframes, climbing at first spot for the first time ever.

13 WTHR has claimed many awards and accolades over the years for its remarkable news reporting services. It has been awarded with Peabody Award for the two reports in 2006, Prescription Privacy and Cause of Alarm. Moreover, the channel also claimed the third award for Reality Check: Where are the Jobs? In 2010. Later, it was also once again called for the fourth Peabody Award for its Investigating the IRS series.
