About WVVA News

The network hit the waves for the first time on 31 July 1955, particularly allotting the VHF signal to the Bluefield region after FCC released the 6th Report & Order in 1952. WVVA News had to struggle for space with WCYB-TV (Bristol, Virginia) and WATE-TV (Knoxville, Tennessee) because of having low antenna height and East River Mountain location. So, the authorities decided to limit the increased visual maximum ERP up to 50,000 watts. WVVA News currently holds construction approval for a digital translator that would operate through a transmitter close to Layland on channel 43. The translator would exclusively serve the northern side of the market and operate with the same calls as the main.

The original calls of the station were WHIS-TV, which they named after Hugh Ike Shott, a politician from West Virginia, who was died in 1953 before the channel made it to air. Thus, the WHIS-TV (currently WVVA Bluefield) was founded initially by Shott’s heirs. The station is available on satellite or cable, although viewers can also watch it live over the internet.

In order to receive NBC content from WSLS-TV (located in Roanoke, Virginia, the nearest city that can easily receive channel 6 signals through the long line system of AT&T), the authorities forced the original owners to build a private microwave relay system. After completing it in Sep, WHIS started broadcasting NBC shows from WSLS-TV, and the first one to air was The Pinky Lee Show.

Channel’s Original Facility

The original facility of the channel – where it used to manage all operations- was Bluefield Municipal Building. Afterward, it shifted to a new location on 1 Jan 1967 at Big Laurel Highway Broadcast Center, where WHIS (currently WVVA News) started color transmission.

The Shott family, which was the owner of Daily Telegraph Publishing Company, was not only managing WHIS-TV (now WVVA News) but also the daily newspaper of the city (Bluefield Daily Telegraph) and the city’s radio networks (WHIS-AM-FM). Federal Communication Commission in 1975 ruled that a single owner can not hold all media platforms in one region and asked them to drop a few. Thus, forcing Shott Family to give up WHIS-TV. After getting into the hands of new owners, channel 6 changed its calls to WVVA (the current ones) on 1 May 1979; and named it after the state to which it was providing services i.e., West Virginia and Virginia.
