WWMT Weather Radar

WWMT Radar is a useful technology for detecting the precipitation level, tornadoes, hurricanes, and other weather conditions in the area. Being controlled by expert meteorologists, WWMT Radar covers the entire area of Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and Grand Rapids. There is a white sphere (a transmitter) located in the WWMT weather radar which sends out a signal in the air in the form of short pulses. After being spread in the air, if they hit water particles in the air, they came back to the WWMT radar as echoes, similar to the echo that we hear in a tunnel. It gives information about the possible rainfall.

How much time does it take to return the pulse back to the WWMT weather radar reveals how far the rain is. Meanwhile, the signal’s strength tells about the type of precipitation. The transmitter of WWMT radar rotates after every 20 seconds, and it sweeps the area from everywhere including the low altitudes as well as the higher altitudes.

About WWMT News

WWMT News first began to telecast on 1 June 1950 under the calls WKZO TV representing the Kalamazoo. It was the 2nd TV service to launch in the West Michigan market after the WLAV News which is now called WOOD TV 8. WWMT News was founded by John Fetzer, a broadcasting pioneer. Fetzer had ownership of WKZO radio too that time which he was running since 1930. Initially, WWMT 3 took the broadcasting content from all the four major TV networks in the US markets i.e. CBS, ABC, NBC, and DuMont. However, WWMT News was and is the primary CBS affiliate service since the beginning following the tracks of its sibling radio.

WWMT News was facing reception issues since the launch of its services, because of the signal strength by WTMJ News in Lake Michigan, Milwaukee area. But, later the issue was resolved. In 1953, the channel lost DuMont because DuMont was no longer operating. WWMT News 3 studios lie in Kalamazoo’s West Maple Street. Whereas, its transmitter is present in Yankee Springs Township’s northwest area near the Patterson Road on Chief Noonday Road/M-179. The cable viewers can see the station’s coverage on Comcast Xfinity, and Charter Spectrum at CH 3.
