The network hit the waves for the first time on 4 December 1983 as the NBC-affiliate network with the call-signs KBVO-TV. It was the only independent TV channel in the region, which was operating under the name of Steve Beard, a small group of investors. Later, the KBVO-TV became a FOX-affiliate channel on 6 October 1986 and started using a brand “Fox 42”. In 1993, Granite Broadcasting bought KBVO from Steve Beard for 54m dollars.
On 1 July 1995, KBVO and KTBC exchanged the affiliation partners of each other, following that KBVO started taking CBS content, and Fox adopted KTBC. After this deal, the channel decided to flip its call-letters into KEYE-TV, the current ones. It also adopted the brand name “K-EYE 42,” meaning “Your Eye on Austin.” However, later the channel removed 42 from its branding and simply adopted “K-EYE” in 1999.

In 1999, Granite had to give away the station due to debt burden; thus, CBS decided to purchase the station for 160m dollars in April. It made KEYE-TV, the second-largest TV station O&O by CBS in the market. After this, Viacom bought CBS, and KEYE automatically shifted under Viacom’s name, which was already managing several TV stations in Texas.
In 2005, the channel’s branding was once again modified. This time it included CBS in its prefix and became “CBS42 K-EYE”. A year later, it completely dropped off its branding and simply adopted the calls KEYE-TV, which were only representing the network’s website and identifications.
CBS gave away the ownership
CBS decided to give away seven of its TV channels to Cerberus Capital Management on 7 February 2007 for 185m dollars. Cerberus created a new company Four Points Media Group, for the sole purpose of managing these newly bought stations. Four Points Media Group managed these channels until 20 March 2009 and then signed a 3-year local contract with the Nexstar Media Broadcasting. Following this, all the Four Points TV networks, including KEYE-TV, were started getting managed by Nexstar.
On 8 September 2011, Sinclair shewed its interest in buying the Four Points Media for 200m dollars from Cerberus Capital. After the US Department of Justice gave antitrust approval to Sinclair, the company started operating those channels, including KEYE, under LMA. This deal made CBS 42, the third Sinclair owned-TV service in Texas region.
