Fox 30 News Jacksonville first hit the air as WAWS-TV on 15 Feb 1981. It was the first independent entertainment channel to establish in the Jacksonville area. Action News Jacks launched one year after the first non-network channel of the market, WXAO-TV, which was generally a religious network. The original owner of the channel was Malrite Communications. It kept sticking with the entertainment format for a while, including movies, cartoons, TV series, and sitcoms. Later, Marlite decided to sell the station to Clear Channel Communications located in San Antonio. After getting under the ownership of different networks, the station is currently owned by the Cox Media Group.
