About WSOC TV News

WSOC TV first started operation on 28 April 1957 as the third TV service in the Charlotte Market following the WBTV CH 3 and WAYS CH 36. Channel 9 News Charlotte live is the second oldest-running TV service in Charlotte after WBTV. It was also the second TV channel to begin broadcasting on VHF Band. The network initially performed its operations from a temporary studio on Plaza Road Extension.

WSOC TV News initially belonged to Carolina Broadcasting, owned by Jones Family that also possessed WSOC 1240 AM Radio and WSOC 103.7 FM. The station’s first primary affiliate partner was NBC Network while keeping the secondary affiliation of ABC Network. In 1959, Carolina Broadcasting decided to sell Miami Valley Broadcasting Company, operated by Cox Enterprises. In 1967, WSOC became only an NBC service while ABC tuned its face to WCCB. However, in 1978, ABC had gained the number one spot in the market; therefore, it no longer wanted to continue the contract with WCCB and instead asked WSOC TV to make a pact. Channel 9 Charlotte accepted the offer and officially started taking content from ABC as a primary entity on 1 July 1978.
